Polished Arrow Christian Martial Arts Network is an evangelistic and discipling ministry and is headed up under the leadership of Pastor Jim Garrett. The group is affiliated with Black Belts of the Faith, the Gospel Martial Arts Union, the International Dragon Kenpo Association, Karate for Christ, and others.
Because Polished Arrow Christian Martial Arts Network is a ministry, we initially did not want to charge a fee 'per se' because we do not want to try to limit the Gospel to those who can afford it. However, we also recognize the concept that is prevalent among American society today that "you get what you pay for." Therefore there is a regularly monthly club fee of $10.00 per family, plus Belt Testing Fees that run from $5.00 up to $25.00 (depending on the rank that you are testing for. This fee includes your certificate and your Belt.) Uniforms may be purchased through the network but are not initially required. If a student genuinely cannot afford these club dues, no questions will ever be asked.
For a couple of explanations, first of all, there is nothing inherently evil about the Martial Arts. Several Eastern Religions have used the Martial Arts as a vehicle for promoting their particular religion. Polished Arrow Christian Martial Arts Network is distinctively Christian and is very boldly and openly used as a vehicle for the promotion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Classes are begun and concluded with prayer, and the Word of God is taught as a portion of each class.
Secondly, there is a courtesy bow given in our classes toward sparring opponents, students of higher rank, and instructors. This act simply replaces a handshake or a salute. Our reason for doing this is primarily because it is a formality that is included in all levels of Martial Arts competition. It is simply a courtesy.
Thirdly, I personally earned my Black Belt after more than 24 years of training in American Free Style Karate, ITF Tae Kwon Do, WTF Tae Kwon Do, ShorinJi Ryu Karate, Jing Sai Do, Ji Yu Ryu, White Tiger Kung Fu, Wado Ryu, Go Ju Ryu, Shuri Ryu Karate, Wing Chun, and Kenpo.
Finally, although techniques from other styles are used, our primary styles taught in class are ShorinJi Ryu Karate, modified Kenpo Karate, and Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwan Do. The Chung Do Kwan style is a very rigid method of self-defense instruction utilizing the concept of precision, speed, and the shifting of weight at the precise moment. Our textbook for this class is The Forces of Tae Kwon Do by Rev. Edward B. Sell, Black Belt, Ninth Dan. It is a distinctively Christian textbook.
